2D Design: Color Wheel Project

We had to create a color wheel with a radially symmetrical design using only circles.  The transition from each color to the next had to be smooth with no jumps. It was pretty difficult to come up with anything creative under that criteria but after going through the sketching process I came up with a good idea.  I had to first go through the unimaginative ideas first.

The first two designs are kind of boring and expected but I thought the last design was something original.  I wanted to have a celestial feel to it and leave a bit of negative space.  Again I decided to render it digitally to help me visualize the end result.  This one would end up being hand painted using all the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
There were things I liked and things I didn't like about this.  I felt like the two triangular shapes on the side distracted and were not cohesive with the rest of the piece.  I also had a problem getting equal amounts of space for each color.  I ran out of time, though, so this is what I brought to class to work with.

Luckily when I was putting my final design on the Bristol board I made a mistake with the widths of the circles.  It worked to my advantage because now there were more spaces to add colors.  I also decided to put spheres where the triangular shapes were to simulate planets and stay with the overall feel of the design.

The colors in the photograph don't do the final piece justice, but you can tell what the design looked like in the end.  My favorite part is the hint of planet created by a slight change in hue.
